Your nonprofit can offer four electronic payment methods on Springly: payment card, installment payment card, Payment Link, and contactless Tap to Pay. This article presents each one, its use cases, and its fees, to help you decide which ones to enable.
This article covers the following topics:
- What online payment methods can you offer?
- Payment card
- Installment payment card
- Payment Link
- Contactless payment with Tap to Pay
- Where do you enable these payment methods?
All these payment methods require a created and verified E-wallet beforehand. Offline payment methods (check, cash, wire transfer) remain available alongside them on your forms.
What online payment methods can you offer?
| Payment method | Use for | Payment Fees |
|---|---|---|
| Payment card | Memberships, donations, ticketing, online shop | 3.1% + $0.30 |
| Installment payment card | Memberships, ticketing, online shop (not donations) | 3.1% + $0.30 per installment |
| Payment Link | Outstanding payments, invoicing, one-time collection | 3.1% + $0.30 |
| Tap to Pay | In-person collection, no terminal needed | 3.1% |
In all cases, your nonprofit can choose to cover the fees itself or invite the payer to contribute to them via a Tip.
The general workings of the service (E-wallet, receiving funds, payout to your bank account) are detailed in the article Discover how online payment works.
Payment card
Payment card is the most widely used payment method. It can be enabled on all your campaigns: memberships, donations, ticketing, and online shop.
Payments are secured by 3D Secure technology: the payer receives a verification code from their bank — by text or through their banking app — to complete the transaction.
Springly accepts Visa, Mastercard, and Amex cards, including those issued by neobanks and online banks.
Installment payment card
Card installment payments split the total amount into equal parts spread over time: 2, 3, or 4 monthly installments. Example: a $100 membership fee paid in 4 installments results in 4 payments of $25, charged one month apart.
The first installment is charged immediately. The payer receives a confirmation email with their payment schedule, then a notification 3 days before each charge.
Two conditions are required to enable installment payments:
- a verified e-wallet;
- tax receipts disabled on the relevant form.
Installment payments are therefore not available for donations. Details on setup, canceling a payment schedule, and handling failed payments can be found in the article How installment payments work for memberships, events, and the online shop.
SEPA Direct Debit
SEPA Direct Debit allows you to collect recurring donations and membership fees directly from the payer's bank account. SEPA Direct Debit is available on the Expert plan only.
The payer enters their IBAN once and signs a mandate authorizing recurring charges at the frequency defined in the form. A SEPA mandate does not expire unless it goes unused for 36 months.
SEPA Direct Debit has two main advantages: lower fees than card payments (0.5% + €0.20) and no expiration date to monitor. For donations, tax receipts are automatically sent with each payment.
The full details are described in the article SEPA Direct Debit on AssoConnect.
SEPA Direct Debit is only available on the EXPERT plan and on the donation form.
Payment Link
A Payment Link lets you request a specific amount from one person (or up to 10 recipients), with or without a form. Payment Links are useful after a membership is confirmed, to follow up on an unpaid balance, invoice for a service, or run a one-time collection.
You create a Payment Link from Payments > Payment Link. Each recipient receives a personal, secure link by email, valid for 15 days. Payment is made by credit or debit card only.
Once payment is complete, the status changes from Payment Requested to Paid and the funds are deposited into your e-wallet.
Step-by-step instructions are available in the article Using the Springly Payment Link.
Contactless payments with Tap to Pay
Tap to Pay turns an NFC-compatible smartphone into a payment terminal. Tap to Pay lets you collect payments in person — at an event, a volunteer shift, or a sale — without an external terminal or physical cash register.
The payer taps their contactless card, phone, or connected device against the nonprofit's smartphone. Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay digital wallets are accepted. For amounts over $50, the payer enters their PIN on the smartphone screen.
An NFC-compatible smartphone is required: Android 12 or higher, or iPhone XS or later running iOS 17.3.
Technical requirements and the activation procedure are covered in the article How to collect contactless payments with Tap to Pay.
Where do you activate these payment methods?
Where you activate a payment method depends on how you collect payments: through a form, via a link sent to a specific person, or in person. In all three cases, your e-wallet must be created and verified beforehand.
On a membership, donation, ticketing, or shop form
The choice is made form by form: each form has its own payment methods.
Open your form, go to the Configuration tab, then to step 4 "Payment and confirmation". Check the payment methods you want to offer:
- Payment Card — immediate collection.
- Installment Payment Card — enter the number of installments and the frequency, i.e. the interval in months between two payments. This option is unavailable for donations and for forms with tax receipts enabled.
SEPA Direct Debit can also be enabled at the donation form level. It is reserved for the Expert plan.
A published form can be updated at any time: payment methods added will apply to future sign-ups, with no effect on already recorded registrations.
For the Payment Link
The payment link is not configured within a form. It is created on demand, from the Payments > Payment Link menu.
Click "Create a payment link", then fill in:
- the recipients, up to 10 people per link;
- the requested amount, identical for all recipients;
- a custom description, visible to the payer.
Springly generates a unique link and automatically sends it by email to each recipient. The link remains active for 15 days, unless disabled by an administrator. Payment is made exclusively by payment card.
For Tap to Pay
Tap to Pay is activated once per smartphone, then stays available for all your in-person collections.
- Go to the Payments > Tap to Pay section of your Springly account.
- Add your smartphone.
- Download the "Springly - Tap to Pay" mobile app on that smartphone.
You can then collect payments directly from the app, without going through a form: enter the amount, confirm, and present the phone to the payer.
Tap to Pay is available in France only, on smartphones compatible with NFC: Android 12 minimum, or iPhone XS and newer running iOS 17.3.
