You are trying to embed an external website in an iframe on a custom page of your Springly website. However, the tool does not accept the link you are trying to insert, or the iframe is not displaying. This article is here to help.
If you want to do the reverse, meaning embed a Springly element on an external website, check out our dedicated article: Embedding a Springly form on an external website.
What is an iframe?
An iframe is a way to embed a web page within the content of another page. With iframes, users stay on your site rather than being redirected elsewhere, making for a smoother browsing experience. It is more user-friendly, and it helps build your website's reputation and visibility.
For example, you can add a Google Maps card to display your organization's address, or showcase your nonprofit's mission through a YouTube video.
Can all websites be embedded via an iframe?
The short answer is: no.
If you want to embed a website on a custom page of your Springly site, you will need to do a little investigation first.
To do this, look for a "Share" or "Embed" option, click on it, and check whether the "embed / embed code" option is available.
Iframe embedding is possible
Let's use Google Calendar as an example to see whether an iframe embed is possible.
On your computer, open Google Calendar.
On the left, go to the "My calendars" section. Click the down arrow to expand it. Then click the options icon next to the calendar you want to share, and select "Settings and sharing".
An embed code is available under the "Integrate calendar" section. This means you can embed it on a custom page of your Springly website.
We recommend this video for detailed instructions on embedding an Airtable table in Springly.
Embedding an iframe code is only possible on a custom page (not on Smart pages).
No iframe embedding possible
However, some sites have restrictions that prevent their content from being manually embedded in iframes.
Example:
If we try to embed www.google.com, it won't work. A gray screen appears instead. This means embedding is not possible for that site.
Common error causes
In some cases, the iframe may not display on your page. Here are a few possible reasons.
The iframe code is incorrect
This is the first thing to check if you're seeing a display issue or an error when entering the code. Copy the code and re-enter it; it's easy to accidentally leave part of it out.
If that doesn't fix the issue, move on to the following possibilities.
The Springly website is not active
As long as your Springly website has the status "Site under maintenance," iframe-embedded content will only be visible to administrators.
You need to activate your Springly website, which also controls these display modes. To do so, go to Website > Settings and theme and select the Active site option from the dropdown menu.
A message such as "The requested page is configured to not be displayed in an iframe on www.asso.fr only on www.XXXXX.com" appears on the screen.
There are several possible technical causes, including ad blockers.
How can you work around the block?
- If you are using Safari or Firefox, the issue is likely browser-related. Log in with Chrome to set up the iframe on the custom page;
- If you are using an ad blocker such as Adblock, Adlock, etc., you will need to disable it.
Content is not displaying (after the link has been embedded)
You are able to embed your link on your custom page, but nothing appears on your published page. Again, your browser or its extensions may be responsible for the iframe failing to display.
How to work around the block?
- If you are using a browser other than Chrome (such as Safari), the issue is likely browser-related. Log in with Chrome to verify that the iframe block displays correctly on the published page and, if not, set up the iframe on the custom page from Chrome;
- Try viewing your page in private browsing mode to check whether browser extensions, which are disabled in private mode, may be causing the issue.

SSL certificate issue
You are trying to embed a site in an iframe but are running into this error: "The URL must start with https://."
There are a few limitations to note regarding the source URL,
- if your site uses HTTPS, you can only embed content from other HTTPS sites,
- if you use HTTP, you can only embed URLs that also use HTTP.
You should therefore never mix HTTP with HTTPS because:
- It undermines the HTTPS protocol currently in place (and therefore compromises site security).
- Most browsers block this type of attempt: if you do this, some browsers will not display the iframe content.
How to fix this issue?
Two options:
- You choose not to display the site you wanted to embed in an iframe;
-
You make sure both sites use the same protocol.
i.e. If your site is on https and the site you want to embed in an iframe is on http, install an SSL certificate on the site you are trying to display. To learn more: see the following article.
